INTRODUCTION
Think of Phenomenon Based Learning (PhBL) as a method to foster academic and personal skills among our students, so that they leave the classroom not needing us to tell them what and how to do something, but knowing that they have the skills to navigate their world creatively, efficiently, and compassionately. By putting PhBL into practice, we aim to help our students be more engaged in the classroom by becoming more autonomous learners.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this highly practical training course, participants will be able to:
● Identify the critical difference between language learning and language acquisition.
● Clarify the importance of planning with a growth mindset.
● Create scaffolding activities and techniques.
● Design mini-lessons that give micro-focus to any unit.
● Integrate DOK (Depth of Knowledge) tools into lessons to increase higher-level thinking.
CONTENT & SHEDULE
• Session 1: Why is it important to know the difference between language learning and language acquisition?
• Session 2: How will using a growth mindset improve my students’ success in and out of the classroom?
• Session 3: Prove to me that all the effort in creating scaffolding is worth it!
Implementation Period: Participants will return to their classrooms and implement the techniques learned during the first three sessions.
• Session 4: You’re telling me that enquiry questions will inspire my students to engage?
• Session 5: If my students develop agency, how does that affect their professional prospects?
• Session 6: How does positive reinforcement ensure the success of a PhBL project?
METHODOLOGY
The "Phenomenon-Based Learning for the Secondary Classroom" course employs a multi-faceted, interactive, and reflective approach to professional development. The methodology is designed to ensure that participants not only gain theoretical knowledge but, even more importantly, develop practical skills that can be immediately applied in their classrooms. The course uses a combination of teaching strategies to deal with different learning styles and promote active engagement.
FACILITATOR BIODATA
Donna Fields Feldman, PhD, has more than 30 years of experience in the classroom as a primary, secondary and university teacher on three continents, a teacher trainer, and an international speaker and educator. She has published books on scaffolding for the CLIL classroom in Spanish and in English (101 Scaffolding Techniques for the Language and Content Teacher) and four volumes of the Comprehensive Guide to Phenomenon-Based Learning, as well as extensive articles appearing in educationally-renowned publications. After living in Valencia, Spain for 25 years she is now based in Todos Santos, Mexico.
