INTRODUCTION
Pronunciation is an essential part of learning a language but teaching it can be challenging (for teachers and for students!) *. In this fun, practical short course participants will experience first-hand simple tips and techniques for teaching different areas of pronunciation as well as reflect on way to adapt them for their own classrooms. I hope teachers will go away with lots of ideas and feeling confident about how to integrate it into their Primary classroom.
*NB: It’s not about trying sound a certain way, it is about being understood and being able to understand other people!
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this 3-day-course participants should have:
• reflected on the challenges of teaching pronunciation and explored some of features of British English pronunciation.
• experienced some pronunciation activities as students.
• experimented with some of the activities in the context of their own classroom.
• had the opportunity to exchange ideas and share their thoughts and experiences.
SCHEDULE & CONTENT
The course will cover the following content:
Day 1: ABC: Starting at the beginning.
• Why teach pronunciation? And what are the challenges?
• Teaching the English Alphabet: what problems do our students have and how can we help them?
Day 2: Teaching words: Letters Vs sounds
• Practical activities to draw students’ attention to how letters behave in words, including:
- letters that are pronounced in different ways (The same but different!)
- letters which make different sounds when they sit next to each other. (Letters that are friends)
- letters which are seen but not heard (Silent letters)
• Group reflection and evaluation of the activities.
Day 3: Putting it all together
• How words sound different in sentences and how we can help students notice this.
• Your own classroom: creating an activity for use with our own students.
METHODOLOGY
This course will use demonstrations, PPT presentations and video to introduce features of pronunciation and classroom activities. There will be group and pair work discussions to evaluate the ideas and, with the support of the session facilitator, participants will work in small groups to reflect on and adapt the activities for their own teaching context.
