INTRODUCTION
An English class must be a space where students and teachers can use English as a motivating communication tool and creating a podcast or a video may be a powerful final task for students, to motivate them improve their oral and written skills for a clear purpose.
In this training, teachers will be asked to put everything they learned into practice through guided activities and projects to carry out in their actual classroom during that week so they can show the rest of the teachers samples of the work their students did and motivate each other to use podcasts and video recording into their teaching.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this very hands-on course participants should:
- Know how to design communicative tasks to create podcasts and videos in the English class to improve their students’ oral and written skills.
- Create podcasts, record videos and use Chroma key with their students as a motivating tool using basic equipment such as their smartphones, school tablets or computers.
- Learn to use the most important aspects of radio software Spreaker REC Studio, and video recording software OBS Studio, to use with chroma key effects.
SCHEDULE & CONTENT
Day 1: Creating podcasts in the English class:
- Why and how to create podcasts in our classes?
- Designing oral and written communicative tasks in order to create our podcasts.
- Recording, publishing and sharing your podcasts on Spreaker REC studio and Spreaker platform.
- Project 1. Recording an oral task with your students: songs, story-telling, descriptions, interviews, etc.
Day 2: Creating school videos in the English class:
- Why and how to create videos in the English class?
- Designing oral and written communicative tasks in order to create our school videos.
- Recording, publishing and sharing our videos.
- Project 2. Creating videos with your students to improve their oral skills: interviews, story-telling, songs, TV programs, etc.
Day 3: Using Chroma in the English class
- Introduction to OBS: open access software to create a professional TV recording studio.
- Technical issues: How to create and set your scenes, layers and sources to create and publish your videos.
- Using Chroma key and other basic effects.
- Project 3: recording videos with your students in class using OBS software and chroma key.
METHODOLOGY
The three sessions will start with an introduction of goals, contents we will work on and resources we will use.
We will continue showing real examples of how to easily create podcasts with Spreaker, and create videos with OBS and chroma key.
Our main goal will be that our students practice their communicative skills in real motivating tasks or projects.
The three sessions will be very practical so teachers work in pairs or small groups to record their own podcasts or videos with assigned tasks according to their teaching level.
As extra practice, at the beginning of the second or third class, some teachers will be able to present to the rest of their peers the podcasts or videos recordings they created in their schools in previous days, to encourage the rest of the teachers and show a real motivating example.
COURSE FACILITATOR
Juan Francisco Montero Alarcón is a primary and secondary English teacher, passionate about using technology and innovative projects in the English class.
In 2015, he started recording podcasts and simple videos in the English classroom to improve his students´ written and oral skills, and motivate them to work on real life communicative tasks.
In 2017, he started coordinating the Erasmus project Eurokids24News to create school radios and newspapers in five European schools. He is, still today, visiting other Erasmus countries with his primary students who are working with the project.
In 2022, he started using Chroma key in the English classroom, asking his students to work on story-telling projects, interviews to other classmates and school visitors, cooking recipes, describing themselves, participating in debates…
