INTRODUCTION

Teaching English in Early Years can often be frustrating.
One hour a week, limited continuity, and children who do not always see the English teacher as their main classroom reference can easily lead to chaotic sessions, weak classroom management and the feeling that very little real learning is taking place.
In this context, it is easy to fall back on ineffective practices.
This course starts from a different premise: effective English sessions in Early Years are possible, if we understand how young children learn and how to design sessions that really work.
The course offers a realistic and practical approach to teaching English to children aged 3–6, focusing on structure, routines, teacher language and active participation, so that English time becomes meaningful, manageable and enjoyable for both teachers and learners.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Understand how young children learn English and what they really need at ages 3–6.
• Plan and deliver effective English sessions in Early Years using routines, stories, songs, movement and play.
• Use simple and meaningful teacher language and introduce phonics naturally to support listening, pronunciation and confidence.

SCHEDULE & CONTENT

The course will focus on:
 English in Early Childhood Education: what it is (and what it is not)
 The role of the English teacher in a global and shared curriculum
 Key elements of an effective Early Years English session
 Routines, classroom language and repetition as learning tools
 Storytelling, songs, movement and play in English
 Introducing sounds and phonics in a natural, age-appropriate way
 Planning realistically: objectives, assessment and time constraints

METHODOLOGY

The course follows a practical, reflective and classroom-oriented approach.
Participants will engage with:
• Real classroom examples and teaching situations
• Reflection on current practice
• Practical ideas ready to use in the classroom
• Clear links between curriculum, methodology and daily teaching decisions
The focus is on what really works in Early Years English, not on idealised or unrealistic models.
